Support For New Students

We understand school is such an important part in our students’ lives. At Glenferrie Primary our teaching staff work together to support each child as a whole. And our vibrant school community, including our Parents & Friends Association, and informal year-level parent groups, will ensure new families also quickly get up to speed with school life and social events throughout the year.

New parents – both for incoming prep students at the start of the year and for students in any year level starting at any time in the year – are well supported by the School community. Your child will:

  • Be allocated a student buddy to help them with any initial questions and for playground

  • Have an initial 1:1 learning assessment with their teacher to expedite the development of an individualised learning plan, ensuring they are taught at their level of need

  • Support from the school leadership team to ensure they are settling in well, particularly over the first 1-2 months.

Check out the information below on different supports and extracurricular activities.

At Glenferrie Primary School, we are proud to be on a journey of supporting and promoting student health and wellbeing through our partnership with The Resilience Project.

All students participate in weekly lessons focused on building their understanding of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness, and Emotional Literacy. These lessons provide students with practical strategies to support their wellbeing and help them develop the skills they need to thrive.

This whole-school approach also involves our teachers and families, working together to support students in learning lifelong habits that foster happiness, strengthen relationships, and build resilience.

At Glenferrie all our teachers develop individualised learning plans for every student. This enables teachers to differentiate their approach, teaching each student at their point of need. Our teachers work in teams, benefitting from collaborative planning and teaching across year levels, and ensuring that all teachers are aware of and can support students as they develop through their primary school years. New starters go through an expedited learning assessment with their classroom teacher to determine their learning level, interests and goals. A parent/teacher meeting is also scheduled shortly after the student’s commencement of to further build an understanding of the student’s learning needs, an dot build school/family engagement.

All new starters get a buddy. Preps have a formal buddy program with the Year 5 students – they meet throughout the year for joined learning programs. New students at other year levels are supported with in-class buddies to help them settle in.

All Glenferrie students are assigned to one of four Houses – Slyth, Martin, Jona and Owen. Every Monday morning, after the all-school assembly, the year 6 house captains coordinate house activities for their students. This is a terrific opportunity for students to make friends across year levels – ensuring lots of friendly faces in the playground and contributing to our wonderful inclusive community.

At Glenferrie Primary School, we are excited to welcome new enrolments into our community. We understand that starting school is a big step, and we are committed to helping our new Prep students—and their families—feel confident, informed, and ready for the school year ahead.

To support a smooth transition into school life, we offer a comprehensive range of orientation programs:

This program includes four engaging sessions designed for students to explore our school environment, alongside two informative sessions for parents. In 2025, these sessions will take place every Thursday during the last four weeks of Term 2.

Students enrolled for Prep in the following year are invited to attend three dedicated Transition Days. These sessions give children a chance to:

  • Experience the classroom environment
  • Meet their future teachers
  • Become familiar with school routines
  • Start building friendships

Transition sessions run from 9:10 am to 10:30 am on three selected days in November and December.
